After 3 hrs sleep we got up at 3.00 am to catch a taxi to the airport arriving before British airways had even opened their gates and the staff had arrived for work. It was a quick flight to Barcelona where we met our cruise ship staff who booked through our luggage and took us to the bus that would take us to our ship ready for a 7 night cruise.
The ship was called the Voyager of the seas the biggest in the fleet and feels enormous with 3,800 passengers and 1,500 staff. Ben & Laura were pleased with the teenagers’ area complete with Nintendo games and mini golf.
The whole family went ice skating on the last day when we were cruising which Laura and Shelley enjoyed run by the staff that put on the Ice skating show earlier in the week. There were only 30 children on board as the school holidays were over and most of the passengers were European, UK or American although the cruise company is American so everything was in American dollars.

Each day we would pack our day packs and water and prepare for the next port of call. We usually docked at about 7 am which was announced
loudly by Captain Frank our Norwegian Captain. He reminded on the last day that we should take our cameras with us when we arrived at Palermo in Sicily as it would be a rare opportunity to take a photo as the ship departed without us if we were late. This nearly happened to us in Rome but that’s another story!! Chris had a quick look at the bridge
and saw the tiny scooter that the Captain used to get around. Most passengers would book the excursions but e generally travelled independently preferring to use trains and buses which was exciting if not sometimes confusing. It would also save us up to $500 per day for an excursion for the family!! This would have ended up being more than the cost of our entire trip!
We had two formal dinner nights in which our waiters and bar staff sang songs and marched around the room with the passengers waving napkins in the air. It was really the funniest thing we have ever seen. Victor would serve us every night and the bar staff would encourage us to order exorbitantly US$ drinks which did work quite well as Chris wanted to try all the different beers of the world!

We stayed in a cabin which was like staying in a caravan in terms of space which was just fine and each night our stateroom attendant would turn down the beds and create a towel art design which were really very good.
We could have gone to a towel art class on the last day but didn’t quite make it. Chris, Ben and Laura went to a bingo match but didn’t win and Chris went to an art sessions about the painting that were on sale at the auction the following day including the Picasso! He went to the auction but didn’t bid on it!
Chris got some great photos of our ship and other ships we saw docked as we had promised to send them through to Don Boyd a friend who has a keen interest and heaps of knowledge about ships and gave us very useful advice. See separate
